generally do you paint then assemble or assemble then paint or is it really dependant upon what the model is, size etc??

It is a case of personal preference, and the size/dimension of the model. I have never pre-painted a kit, however, I saw that Beejay had pre-primed his Venator and I thought that it was a very good idea due to the size of the parts and the amount of exposed surface area involved. The problem with pre- painting a smaller kit would be that you could be applying paint to a surface that needs to take glue- which will effect the final bond of the parts.
I can not stress enough that acrylics are the way to go- brushes wash out in water, low toxicity, easier(than enamels) removal if required, and faster drying time.

Nearly all the models I make are 1:72 scale. I always paint first and am meticilous with the gluing. If any ever does expose itself it is so much easier to lightly touch up afterwards. Plus you get so much better clean lines when you paint before build when using multiple colours. Especially with WWII aircraft when the underside is 99% of the time a different colour to the top.

Here are some dinosaur model projects I am currently working on.
They are all from the Tamiya 1/35 scale diorama series. I made all of the series back in the mid 90's and, in typical hamish style, I bought seconds of every kit in case I wanted to do mods on later incarnations. Well, the time has come and the inspiration has been rekindled, so here they are. In each picture there is the original 90's version finished and the new oo's version in progress. Firstly is my brachiosaurus(s). I have used the alternate front L foot and modified the neck/head position so that they can look like two different animals standing together. You can see the milli-putt where I have done the first rough-in to blend the texture into the existing skin surface. I will probably repaint the original when I decide on the colour scheme of the new one. I will have them as a pair and there are two babies to go with them.http://i621.photobucket.com/albums/tt294/22hamish/dinosaurs/Picture010copy.jpg?t=1264827397

Next are my triceratops. The original looks dead-pan so I really wanted to modify the new one to a more dynamic pose. This was a difficult mod as I had to reconstrust the entire lower 'lip'(beak) and do an inner mouth with tongue. The alternate front R leg, provided in the kit, was used. I have modified a baby chasmosauraus from another kit to be a convincing hatchling for this pair. I might have them being harrassed by the pair of tyrannosaurs.
My tyrannosaurs. The original one is very rigid in the tail and stance. For the new one, I am using the alternate(running) right leg and I have raised the head and turned it to the right. I may yet modify the tail. The jaws-closed was another option with the kit. I will have to support this model somehow as it has only one foot touching the ground.

http://i621.photobucket.com/albums/tt294/22hamish/dinosaurs/Picture009copy.jpg?t=1264827554This front view shows how the slightest alteration in the head position creates a look that is so much more dynamic and engaging. These will have to go onto quite a large base if they are to go with the two tric's.
I have scored a number of excellent pliable models from the wonderful Mr Centuri's shop of wonders. I will post photos of them later. They are all very close in scale to these kits so I will have them incorporated into dioramas as well.

http://i621.photobucket.com/albums/tt294/22hamish/dinosaurs/Picture013copy.jpg?t=1264826981This spinosaurus is superb. The Papo rnage are clearly modelled from the Stan Winston JP dinosaurs, but are almost prefect scale to place with the tamiya range. The spino is over 12 inches long.
http://i621.photobucket.com/albums/tt294/22hamish/dinosaurs/Picture014copy.jpg?t=1264827140 The Papo Tric, Parasaurolophus, Stego and Pachy. The differences in skin texture between thw papo tric and the tamiyaa tric pairs mean that they cannot be displayed immediately next to each other, unless I want to depict them as slightly different genus.

">I have modified the bucket considerably. It was out-of shape and the vents at the back were wrong. I have filled it out more in the side and back with milliput and extended the snout. I have reshaped the brow to make the lense more accurate in shape. I will extend the visor out more once I have finished sanding/detailing the lense and face of the bucket.I will reposition the head turning to the right side in line with the aiming hand/arm, which has had to be extensively modified. I have yet to carve the creases and contours into the sleeve and arm armour. I am still figuring out how to make a pistol with the correct ribbing along the sight/barrel. I will then reconstruct the fingers/thumb around the gun. The arm looks hyper-extended in this shot, but it is ok once he is mounted on the bike with head turned. I don't want to go overboard detailing him, but i will redo some of his belt straps and pistol holster.

Bought two, built one and stashed the other.
I played with the colouring of the front end a little, and I wasn't happy with the way it was displayed.
I thought it should look like it was hurtling along, even on a stand!!
Anyway I scratchbuilt a section of canyon wall out of foam and wood, added some sand, rocks, vegetation, and a little greeblie..
I mounted it like it was cornering hard, with one pod powering hard, and the other braking.
