For the engines and cockpit, I used some of the decals and added a few scratched paint blobs here and there.
Most of the weathering on the Y-Wing was done with washes (thinned down paint) and pastel chalks due to the small size of the kit and the amazing amount of detail.
I always use decal softener to bed the decals down into the panel joins and finish with a coat of rattle-can Testors dull-cote. When that is dry, I lightly airbrush a basecoat mist over the decals to 'dull down' the brightness of the colours and then go at it again with soot and dust streaks...
To me, a banged up, dusty, rusty old ship with bright clean decals just looks wrong.
It's kinda tough sometimes to know when to stop with the weathering as the 'less is more' rule doesn't always apply when you are talking rebel ships.
